When you ask a logistics company for a quote, you’ll probably be asked a few questions.
What are you sending? Where is it going? When does it need to be collected?
It can sometimes feel like a lot of detail for what sounds like a straightforward delivery, but there’s a reason for it. The more your logistics provider knows about the job, the easier it is to work out the right vehicle, plan the collection and avoid problems further down the line.
Here are some of the details worth having ready.
What are you actually sending?
The type of goods, their size and their weight can affect which vehicle is suitable and how the load needs to be handled.
If the goods are fragile, temperature-sensitive or particularly valuable, that’s important to mention too.
How big and heavy is the load?
Knowing the dimensions and weight helps the logistics provider understand what vehicle is appropriate and how much space the goods will require.
If you’re moving several pallets or a larger consignment, it’s particularly useful to provide as much detail as possible rather than simply describing it as a “large delivery”.
Where is it being collected from and delivered to?
Is there a loading bay? Can a larger vehicle reach the site? Are there restrictions on access? Will the driver be able to get close enough to the delivery point?
For some deliveries, these details can determine whether a standard vehicle is suitable or whether specialist equipment is needed.
How will the goods be loaded and unloaded?
If there’s a forklift available at both ends, that’s useful to know. If there isn’t, you may need a vehicle that can unload independently.
Blue Whale’s fleet includes vehicles ranging from small vans to 45-foot artic curtain sides, as well as flatbeds with crane or Moffett offload options.
The right option depends on the job, which is why the unloading arrangements are worth discussing before the vehicle is booked.
When does it need to arrive?
Be clear about the actual deadline and whether there is any flexibility.
That gives the logistics provider a better understanding of what needs to happen and which service is appropriate.
Are there any other requirements?
Perhaps the goods need to be kept chilled. Maybe they’re particularly fragile. Perhaps they’re being delivered to a busy commercial site with specific access requirements.
It’s always better to mention these things at the beginning.
A few extra questions before a delivery can save a lot of time later.
